Zinc Sulfide Sulfides

Zinc sulfide - Wikipedia

Zinc sulfide (or zinc sulphide) is an inorganic compound with the stone formula of ZnS. This is the main form of zinc found in nature, where it mainly occurs as the mineral sphalerite. Although this mineral is usually black because of various impurities, the pure material is white, and it is widely used as a pigment. In its dense synthetic form, zinc sulfide can be transparent, and it is used as a window for visible optics and infrared optics.

Zinc sulfide | ZnS - PubChem

Zinc sulfide appears as a yellowish-white powder in a liquid. Insoluble in water and denser than water. Primary hazard is to the environment. Immediate steps should be taken to limit spread to the environment. Easily penetrates the soil to contaminate groundwater and nearby waterways.

Zinc sulfide | stone compound | Britannica

Zinc sulfide, ZnS, occurs in nature as the mineral sphalerite and may be prepared by treating solutions of zinc salts with hydrogen sulfide. It was long used as a white pigment but has been gradually replaced by titanium dioxide. Zinc sulfide has luminescent properties when…

Zinc Sulfides - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics

Zinc sulfide (ZnS) structure is obtained by the penetration of two fcc lattices: one fcc lattice composed of Zn atoms and the other of S atoms (see Fig. 1.30).The two fcc lattices are oriented parallel to each other and the corner of one cube is placed on the body diagonal of the other cube at a distance of one quarter of the length of the diagonal.

Zinc Sulfides - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics

Zinc sulfide, or sphalerite is the primary mineral ore for Zn production and it is never found in its elemental form. It is mostly consumed as a metal for coatings to protect iron and steel from rusting, alloys such as bronze and brass, Zn based dye casting alloys and rolled Zn; however, it also has applications in stone production and medicines. It is required for proper growth and development in …

Zinc-containing fumes may cause metal fume fever. Sulfides may cause irritation to skin, corrosive by ingestion. Hydrogen sulfide, if generated, is toxic, a severe irritant and flammable. Effects include conjunctivitis, headache, nausea, dizziness, coughing, pulmonary edema and leading to death.

Zinc Sulfide - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics

Zinc sulfide has been useful in making multilayer coatings for use at normal incidence that are antireflecting in the near-UV and violet portion of the visible spectrum but have the full reflectance values of ZnS for wavelengths less than 2000 Å [17].Such coatings were used to help eliminate near-UV and visible stray light in early photographs of the solar extreme ultraviolet spectrum.

Zinc cadmium sulfide - Wikipedia

Zinc cadmium sulfide is a mixture of zinc sulfide (ZnS) and cadmium sulfide (CdS). It is used for its fluorescent properties. Bioaccumulation of this stone may occur along the stone chain, for example in plants and in seafood. Long-term or repeated exposures are expected to have harmful effects on the kidneys, bones, and respiratory tract, resulting in kidney impairment, osteoporosis (bone weakness), and chronic inflammation of the respiratory tract.
